Paris giant bike lane, an ecologic catalyst at the Olympic games
Every time a country is the venue for Olympics or other sport event, it doesn’t spare in expenses to improve or ample its infrastructure. This is the case of Paris, who choose a cycling mobility for citizens and tourists during the competition season.
This city has created an ambitious and large bike lane network. This giant bike way connects with various scenarios of Olympics.
The sustainable initiative is boost by Anne Hidalgo mayoress. Politics promised that this project also works as a great celebration of cycling and a catalyzer for ecologic transition.
How long is it and where does it take you?
The giant bike lane is formed by a bike way network, with a total of 32 miles. These are divided equitably among Paris and their surroundings; making easier to get around to any sport venue using bike only.
Keeping in mind the quantity of tourism, definitely will be a safer option of mobility. But, without considering like the perfect opportunity to explore the streets of this famous city.
Now, among the emblematic places to get around through this cycling network will be, for example, Roland-Garros for tennis, Grand Palais for fencing and Seine Saint-Denis for basquetball.
The plan contemplates the integration of the RER-Vélo of the region Île-de-France and the Vélopolitain of the Great Paris.
2021-2026 Cycling Plan
This Project started to formulate since 2021, being part of the Cyclist plan of Paris, the one that will expand up to 2026 by the current mayor’s office.
In this way, the purpose is that, for 2026 city transforms into a 100% bike friendly environment. Meaning, it has the necessary infrastructure to provide comforts and safety to cyclist.
Nowadays, Paris has more than 621 miles of cycling installations. From those, 52 were created during the first confinement in 2020, and now are permanent. Something similar to what occurred on the Insurgentes bike way in Mexico.
Giant Bike way, will be temporal or permanent?
Nowadays, Paris tries to position as a referent of sustainable mobility. Now, with this cyclist network takes a high step to achieve it.
For that, the best of all is how they express it from the mayor’s office, the giant bike way “won’t be available only, during Olympics, but will remain after these”. In short, will be permanent.
That isn’t everything. To cover the offer and demand during this competitive season, were installed 10,000 temporary bicycle parking places around different scenarios. These will be re-located after Olympic Games; likewise, will be put into operation 3,000 new Vélib bikes.
This great expansion, increase city budget to 250 EUR millions with 150 of the previous plans, detailed the local administration.
